Governor Signs House Bill Expediting Licensure for Military Families

Committee of 50 Celebrates Win for Local Service Members

(Clovis, New Mexico) Wednesday, February 26, 2020—Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham today signed House Bill 30, requiring the State to waive fees and expedite issuance of teaching, professional and occupational licenses for military service members, their families, their dependent children and veterans. Members of the Clovis/Curry County Chamber’s Committee of 50, as well as 27th Special Operations Wing Commander Col. Robert Masaitis and his wife Juli, traveled to Santa Fe to witness the moment – acknowledging the measure as a success in streamlining the process for military families across New Mexico.

Before today, military family members with professional and occupational licenses faced the reality that moving to New Mexico would bring hundreds of dollars in fees, as well as lengthy certification exams to transfer their license. The exhausting process can also take many months before applicants are cleared to work. In hope of alleviating some of that stress, the Committee of 50 played an active role in lobbying for House Bill 30 during the Legislative Session earlier this year.

“This is an exciting step for our community in supporting our military families,” said former Committee of 50 Chair James Burns. “Service members have such a difficult life moving from base to base, and as a nation we need to make it as convenient and comfortable as possible. We’re thrilled that this change will simplify that process for some of them.”

“The dedication of James Burns, Chamber President Greg Southard and our New Mexico lawmakers and legislators is a great example of how we can make a positive difference for our military community,” stated Committee of 50 Chair David Robinson. “And any positive difference for our military community is a positive difference for the communities of Clovis, Portales and our nation.”

House Bill 30 states that no licensing fee can be charged to military service members, spouses, dependents and veterans for the first three years that a license is required. It also expedites the application process so that they will receive their State license within 30 days of filing their application and required documents.
